Simparch Manufactured Home

Manufactured Home prompted dialogue between traditional dwelling in the West and the contemporary conditions of home making. This tenuous sign of a mobile home was hand crafted from a combination of recycled and natural materials. Discarded white plastic packaging from new manufactured home shipments was grommetted and woven onto the framework, a grid of sticks from the weed-like "tree of heaven" which were joined together with cable-ties. The work merged traditional and contemporary building processes, the manufactured environment, and a site-specific sensibility to the culture of southern New Mexico where the work was created. Viewers toured the interior or experienced it as a large illuminated structure -- an ethereal beacon in the night.

Carson Hot Springs

You walk in here and tell them you're here and they tell you there are ghosts and if there's a wait you take a walk through the woods where there are mushrooms and violets and fallen trees. To get here you drive along the Columbia river and pass the waterfalls and go over the Bridge of Gods and stop at an antique store where you buy a gold ring for $1 and pick up old pens and glasses. When they say they have tubs available you walk into the water room and get naked in the sulphuric steam and choose a tub length and if you're small like me you choose a short tub. Before you step in they tell you to test the water as it's only hot water and you tentatively ease yourself into the porcelain basin and when you are finally all in you start to cook exquisite with your hair spreading on top like an anemone and you try to sleep but you can't because you are too warm so you look over at Elanor whose body is like an English stem and it feels like being in a salon bath house in the Wild West during Manifest Destiny and every few minutes you take cold swigs of water and pour them over your face. When you stand up on unsure feet they take you to a cot and wrap you tightly in sheets and wool blankets and the only exposed part is your nose and mouth so the only thing to do is breath while cocooned, sweating and sweating, a wet and dark chrysalis. There really isn't anything to think about. There really isn't anything to do but sweat and sleep. When you emerge it is like a peony, unraveling slowly and utterly pink and you need to drink water, a lot of water, and you need to eat fruit, a lot of fruit, but we ate macaroons and drank espresso instead.

The Surf Lodge: Montauk NY

For decades, Montauk on the east end of Long Island has been considered the un-Hampton, a sleepy fishing village with the regions most beautiful coastline. Low-slung seating in a living-room type setting have great views of the projection screen showing classic surf films 24 hours a day. THE DEN also presents an opportunity to hang out and to play a board game with a friend or to spend some alone time with a book from our extensive library.



The Bar is a relaxed environment to grab a beer from an extensive selection on tap, grab a quick burger at the bar, or to try one of the many types of tropical cocktails our mixologists have created specifically for The Surf Lodge. Open all day, it is the après-surf spot to meet up with friends after a long day on the beach.

The Restaurant is laid back and elegant; an indoor/outdoor hangout for guests and locals wanting to dine, celebrate, or enjoy a cocktail and a burger after a day at the beach.

With Executive Chef Sam Talbot at the helm, the cuisine is fine dining without the fuss. Drawing from his childhood spent on the beaches of South Carolina, Talbot keeps the food fresh and from Montauk's local purveyors, with seafood caught daily and a menu built around seasonal ingredients.



Surf, Sand or Sun, whatever your reason is to hit the beach, the deluxe (and ultra cool!) shuttle will get you there in style.

The 1926 bungalow, which sits in the Heights district of Houston, Texas is home to Courtney Barton - aka In(side) the Loop to the blog world. Look for her vintage thrift-store style in the third issue of Refueled which drops in May.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Hotel Saint Cecilia is a secluded estate in Austin's South Congress district. Named in honor of the patron saint of music and poetry, these accommodations take inspiration from the experimentation of 60's writers like William Burroughs, the darling and extravagance of groups like the Stones in the early 70's and the defiance of convention embodied by artists like Miro and Warhol in the late 50's and early 60's. Each of the five didtinct suites, six poolside bungalows and three studios that span theis private wooded property have been designed and furnished to stir the poet and artist in each of us.
